Verses 8 and 9:
"8. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9. Speak up and judge fairly: Defend the rights of the poor and needy." Chapter 31 talks about what leadership is and what leadership isn't. Lemuel's mother warns him against vice and the evils of alcohol. She encourages King Lemuel to be a champion for those who cannot stand for themselves. Lemuel's mother is alluding to the modern concepts of servant leadership. Leaders who lift others and defend others set the expectation for the organization (or the kingdom). A culture of empathy and helping those in need is far more productive than a culture based on positional authority. As those who are impoverished and subjected become valued, they gain the confidence and skills necessary to transcend their situation and increase production for themselves, their families, and their communities. Good Leaders lift others up. When others are lifted, the kingdom prospers.
