Overview of Standard 5:
Standard 5 represents the district leader's ability to model effective Social Emotional Learning skills including creating a welcoming environment for all staff, students, families, school board members, and community, which includes ensuring transparency and process. Standard 5 also addresses understanding policies, statutes, and legal responsibilities.  The superintendent should ensure equity and equality in the leadership of the district.  

Functions:
  1. Candidates understand and can act with integrity and fairness to ensure a district system of accountability for every student’s academic and social success.
  2. Candidates understand and can model principles of self-awareness, reflective practice, transparency, and ethical behavior as related to their roles within the district.
  3. Candidates understand and can safeguard the values of democracy, equity, and diversity within the district.
  4. Candidates understand and can evaluate the potential moral and legal consequences of decision making in the district.

Evidence of Mastery:
Board Annual Calendar: The list of events for the school board is maintained and updated on an annual basis. These events provide guidance and continuity of major events that happen on regular occurrence.  This calendar is updated monthly as new legislative and board priorities become pertinent.  
Legislative Priorities: The Galena City School District has a robust legislative agenda.  GCSD contracts with state and federal lobbyist firms to assist the propagation of the District's legislative agenda.  ​
Legal Presentation: This presentation summarized several legal requirements for staff presentations during mandatory training at the beginning of the year.
Trauma Informed Classrooms: This presentation is one of the presentations I give to faculties and schools across the state.  This presentation focuses on student ACES scores and how to best meet the needs of our students suffering from Trauma and Toxic Stress.
Student Safety in the Classroom:  This is another presentation I give to teachers and administrators.  The focus is increasing student emotional, environmental and intellectual safety in the school.
